Oil-immersed transformers are a type of power transformer in which the core and windings are immersed in insulating oil. This oil serves multiple purposes, enhancing the performance and longevity of the transformer.
Insulation and Cooling: The primary role of the insulating oil is to provide electrical insulation between the windings and to dissipate heat generated during operation. The oil circulates within the transformer, absorbing heat from the core and windings and transferring it to the outer surface or to external cooling systems.
Types of Insulating Oil: Mineral oil is commonly used due to its good insulating properties and thermal conductivity. However, there are also non-mineral oils like silicone-based or synthetic hydrocarbon oils, which offer better fire resistance and environmental properties.
Transformer Construction: The core and windings in an oil-immersed transformer are typically made from high-grade steel and copper or aluminum, respectively. These components are completely submerged in the insulating oil, housed within a robust, sealed tank.
Safety Features: To manage operational risks, these transformers are equipped with safety features like pressure relief devices, oil level indicators, and Buchholz relays (which detect gas bubbles that could indicate internal faults).
Efficiency and Performance: Oil immersion helps maintain the efficiency of the transformer by reducing winding resistance and core losses. It also allows for more compact designs compared to dry-type transformers, as the oil is a more effective coolant than air.
Maintenance Requirements: Regular maintenance includes oil testing for dielectric strength, moisture content, and the presence of dissolved gases, which can indicate internal faults. The tank, bushings, and other components also require periodic inspections.
Environmental Considerations: Oil leaks and spills are a concern with oil-immersed transformers, requiring careful handling and potential environmental safeguards. The use of biodegradable oils is increasing as a way to mitigate environmental impact.
Application: These transformers are widely used in various applications, including utility, industrial, and commercial power distribution, due to their reliability and high power rating capabilities.
